Heidi’s Top Ten Tips for a Healthier Home

  1. Eliminate carpeting from your home.  Carpet traps dirt and allergens in your home and can give off unhealthy fumes depending on the material.  Wood, cement, tile, and vinyl flooring are all healthier alternatives.  When my daughter was young she used to wake up every morning with a stuffy nose.  We replaced her bedroom carpet with a wood floor and she never woke up with a stuffy nose again!

  2. Use an allergen filter on your furnace and change it frequently.

  3. Open windows frequently to air out your home.  Keep plants in your home.  According to NASA houseplants scrub indoor air pollutants, making air fresher and safer. NASA also states that some plants even lower levels of carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, benzene and trichloroethylene.  These compounds are common in building materials such as adhesives and papers and books.

  4. NASA suggests having 1 plant per 100 square feet.  Since plants recycle carbon dioxide.  Orchids and succulents are great at taking in carbon dioxide during the day and releasing oxygen at night. 

  5. Add humidity to your home especially in the Winter months.  A study done by the Agricultural University of Norway showed that houseplants, when grouped together, decrease the likelihood of dry skin, common colds, and sore throats.  You can also put a bowl of water under each bed to increase humidity.

  6. Eliminate cleaning your home with chemicals. This will save you money and your health!   I clean my home with water, white vinegar, and baking soda.  The only chemical I buy is bleach for toilets.  There
